As expected and predicted by jamaicaglobaline (January 14 post) Kamala Harris, daughter of Jamaican Donald Harris from St. Ann today formally entered the race for the Democratic nomination for the Presidency of the United States of America.
Her official website kamalaharris.org carried the message:
â Iâm running for president. Letâs do this together. Join us.â
The date of her announcement was deliberate â chosen to coincide with the observation of âMartin Luther King Jr. Dayâ in the US as a reminder, according to a Harris spokesperson âas the aspirational fight for progressâ. Only three weeks ago jamaicaglobalonline reported that the City of Atlanta had commissioned Jamaican sculptor Basil Watson to produce a new statue of the slain civil rights leader.

Ms Harrisâ bid for the Democratic Party nomination is neither a foregone conclusion nor will it be an easy task as she has entered a very crowded field which includes three other women out of a total of seven candidates who have so far declared.
Of significance to Jamaicans living in the USA, Ms Harris will base her campaign headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland, home to many Jamaican/Americans. Prominent among these is Ambassador Curtis Ward who comments:
Sen. Kamala Harrisâ announcement of her candidacy is welcome news. She has the qualities to be a great president of the United States and the leader of the free world. Her roots as a second generation immigrant of Jamaican and Indian heritage imbues her with a special empathy for humanity. I expect her to receive strong support from the Jamaican, Caribbean and Indian diasporas as well as from the African American community, especially black women
